DSS DJ in general
  • What does DSS mean ?
DSS stands for Discotheque Sound System, a music mixing and recording software for DJs, developed by MyXOFT.

  • What are the DSS DJ requirements ?
DSS DJ 5 is working on Windows 98/Me/2000/XP and it needs DirectX 8. The minimum hardware requirements are an 800 MHz processor, 128 Mb RAM and one soundcard.
We don't have a Linux or Mac version.

  • Does DSS DJ use an external console ?
The latest version (DSS DJ 5.5) DOES accept any external console that is MIDI compatible.

  • Does DSS DJ support keyboard shortcuts ?
Yes. To see what shortcut is used for a button, just bring the mouse over that button and wait for a hint (for this, you have to enable Show Hints option in General Settings Configuration panel). Click here to see all keyboard's shortcuts.

  • What are the DSS DJ demo version limitations ?
You can use the demo version for 30 minutes with all features working. After this period DSS DJ stops. The software is still running but you cannot hear any sound. You have to exit manually. If you start the program again you can use it for another 30 minutes. For unlimited use you have to buy a copy.

  • What soundcards does DSS DJ support ?
DSS DJ supports every simple stereo soundcard (one stereo output) and multi-channel soundcards (front and rear stereo outputs). Click here to read more about soundcard types and configurations supported by DSS DJ.

  • Do you have any documentation about DSS DJ ? How to use ? How to mix ?
Yes. Click here to read some quick flash tutorials about: how to unlock (register) DSS DJ demo, how to use the interface panels and how to do a basic beat mixing.
Click here to download the user's manual.

  • How to configure DSS DJ to work with an external mixer ?
    - If you have a simple stereo soundcard, select in the Audio Configuration panel, the Split mode and the External mixer checkboxes. You will have: deck A on left mono channel and deck B on right mono channel. Buy (if you don't have) a cable with a stereo plug-in at one end (plug it into the soundcard output), and 2 mono plug-ins at the other end (plug them into the mixer's inputs).

    - If you have 2 simple stereo soundcards, select in the Audio Configuration panel, a different soundcard for each output (master and monitor) and check the External mixer option. Buy (if you don't have) 2 cables with stereo plug-ins at both ends (for each cable, plug one end into the soundcard's output and the other end into the mixer's input).

    - If you have a multichannel soundcard (at least front and rear outputs), select in the Audio Configuration panel, the Multichannel Soundcard and the External mixer checkboxes. You will have: deck A on front stereo channel and deck B on rear stereo channel. Buy (if you don't have) 2 cables with stereo plug-ins at both ends (plug one cable into the front channel, the other cable into the rear channel and both remained ends into the mixer's inputs).

Unlocking / registering DSS DJ
  • How to unlock (register) DSS DJ demo ?
Read the *How to register DSS DJ demo* tutorial: flash version or HTML version.

  • What is the authorization key ?
The authorization key is your pass for the online registration system. After you purchase a copy of DSS DJ you will receive an e-mail with a single authorization key, which is unique, it is for you only, so PLEASE DON'T LOOSE IT, write it down for future use. Open the link specified in the e-mail, enter this authorization key and follow the instructions.

  • What is the PRE-register code ?
The PRE-register code is a string like *GGHIKPGG* which is returned by DSS DJ demo version and it is used to generate the unlock code, in the online registration system.

  • What is the unlock code ?
The unlock code is a number generated using the PRE-register code in the online registration system. To get access to the full, unlimited version, you have to enter the unlock code in DSS DJ.
The unlock code is exactly the old serial number (before the DSS DJ 4 version).

  • Will DSS DJ work with the same unlock code if I format my hard disk or reinstall Windows ?
Yes. The PRE-register code remains the same, unless you change your computer configuration. It doesn't matter if you format your computer. The PRE-register code is not software dependent.
If you ever change your hardware configuration or your DSS DJ, the registered version, turns to demo version whatever the reason, you can generate another unlock code, free of charge.

Other stuff
  • What are WAV and MP3 ?
These are the music formats that DSS DJ is accepting. WAV is uncompressed audio data for PC. It's about 10 megabytes per stereo minute. MP3 is a format that compresses raw wav files at about 10 to 1 (so a 10 megabyte wav file would be a 1 megabyte MP3 file). There is some loss of fidelity in the compression.

  • What is ID3-tag ?
The ID3-tag is a block of information that records the artist, song title, album, commentary and other info at the end of the MP3 file.

  • What are pitch and bend functions ?
Pitch modifies the playing speed of a song. The bend function causes a speeding up or slowing down effect, very useful when you want to beat-match 2 songs.

  • What is BPM and how beat mixing works ?
Dance music has a synthesized rhythm. Because of this regular rhythm each track will have a specific number of beats per minute (BPM). The beat mixing is possible because of this regular rhythm and is done by equalizing the speeds of 2 songs (using pitch) and overlapping the beats (using sync or bend).

  • What does latency mean ?
Latency means the delay between a requested command, (like cue, play, bend) and the moment when the soundcard reacts on it. These latencies are related to the soundcard drivers.

  • What is a cue point ?
A cue point records a position in a song so when you want to mix or skip some parts of a song it allows you to start from that position.

  • How do I set a cue point ?
    Read *deck*'s flash tutorial.

  • Can I record my mixes ?
Yes. Select *Start Recording* from the *MENU*. To stop, click again the *MENU* button and select *STOP Recording*.
DSS DJ records your mix in WAV format.
